Earth Day 2010 - Caring for the environment with responsible tourism

Join the more than one billion people in 190 countries that are taking action for Earth Day.
We're well aware of the impact that tourism has at home and abroad, so we strive to balance the environmental impact of travelling with the immense benefits sustainable tourism can bring to destinations and the people who live there.

We start in the office turning off all electrical equipment every night. Our brochure is available on-line in a downloadable version to save paper consumption:

We recycle all the obvious things like paper and printer cartridges, we even re-cycle our old bikes. As part of our on-going maintenance routine we often need to replace parts which, although still servicalbe, don't meet our standards for safety, reliability and comfort.

Many of our hoteliers overseas are part of farming communities that have lived off the land for centuries so their menus are based on fresh, home-grown produce requiring little or no transportation.
Whenever possible, we encourage our hoteliers to re-cycle, and we look to work with businesses that have a well-structured environmental policy in place and help them to develop this further. For instance, we suggest water-saving policies, such as installing showers instead of baths, and not washing all towels every day. We ask our hotels to use energy-saving bulbs, which are 75% more efficient.

We encourage our travelers to fly "carbon neutral" by off-setting carbon emissions which has significant positive impacts on global warming. If you want to consider compensating for the environmental impact of your flight, visit

Run by the World Land Trust which has been working since 1989 to presever the world's most biologically important and threatened lands, and has helped purchase and protect over 375,000 acres of habitats rich in wildlife in Belize, Costa Rica, the Philippines and South America.
